Rheatown was said to be one the oldest communities in Greene County, its first settlers having arrived in the early 1780s. It was located along the old stage road between Jonesborough and Greeneville, one of the main roads passing through the community today still bears the name "Old Stage Road". By the 1820s, it had a post office and several businesses, and had been named in honor of Congressman John Rhea.
GREENE COUNTY, TN.
On October 11, 1863 a Union advance led by Brig. Gen. Edward Potter (Ferrero’s Division) attacked Confederate cavalry commanded by Brig. Gen. John Williams forcing the Confederates to withdraw. At Rheatown the Union cavalry brigade of Col. John Foster had outflanked the retreating Confederates resulting in a rout referred to as the “Rheatown Races.” The engagement was also notable for Confederate use of the Williams gun—a breech loading field peace.
Rheatown Country Store & Deli is much more than the name would imply. Yes, it’s a country store, deli, and grill with tasty daily lunch specials. However, they offer other unique options that aren’t on the menu. Weekly Bible studies, and the Saturday night bluegrass sessions, which have become very popular among the locals and attract many visitors to the Rheatown community of eastern Greene County.
Rheatown Store has been a part of this community Since the early 1960's. Although through the years it has seen many different hands, the Bluegrass has been a part of this small little town for over 35 years. We love to hear how community members remember coming to the store when they were young and to listen to the stories they tell about them going up in this area and how much they enjoyed and still love to come to this little country store.
My wife and I bought the store in November 2022 for the convenience of the operation of our Food truck (the MUNCHIE MACHINE), but when the community found out that we were buying it there wasn't a day that we didn't hear someone ask us about what our plans were and so we decided to open it back up for the community and by the community. The walls of our store display our our neighbors antiques and crafts. The support that this area has shown me and my wife has been overwhelming to both of us.
This is a Letter written by Mr. George Malone after visited our store and he felt that he had to write it down while it was on his mind. This letter is proudly displayed in our store and now is part of the history, for everyone to witness.
